It may seem like the previous world war, but it’s that of today.
"Zero" does not stand for 2,600 years of the Emperor era
and "fight" does not stand for the KAMIKAZE warplane.
"Zero" stands for waste.
It’s about all the waste that I generate.
"Fight" stands for my battle.
All the waste, generated by humans’ insane and never-satisfied desire,
has filled every corner of this planet and now floats all around.
These are the goods that have been branded as ‘worthless’ by owners,
discarded and swept away into oblivion.
We humans discard goods, that once were valuable to us,
without gratitude nor mourning.
Such a state of mind is the cause of all the destruction and pollution.
It’s zero. For me, there is nothing worthless. Therefore, for me there is zero waste.
With these finite and valuable goods,
using my own finite and valuable life,
on this finite and valuable planet,
with all my waste,
I will proudly sing a crazy funeral song
with gratitude and for all lives that have been ravaged by humans.
This is my battle called ART.
This is today’s zero fight.
I will fight as long as my life lasts.
Futuristic DADADA Manifesto 2016
– a crazy dirge from modern Japan, dedicated to all the Dadaists and avant-garde artists who lived a century ago
"Native Americans protect water, earth and sky, respecting all living things as sacred beings. They pray continuously for peace in the world. Their beauty outshines the glory and honor of Wall Street gleaming in the lights of New York City."
In the 20th century, modern civilization filled the entire planet.
At the outset, the reasoning of mankind was completely denied.
DADA: A hundred years ago, Europe experienced WWI, which left an unimaginable number of corpses in piles. Escaping from the war, artists gathered in Switzerland and launched this art movement, which strongly rejected the logic and reasoning of a society that had relentlessly marched into war.
This avant-garde and defiant movement spread to the rest of the world and later transformed into surrealism and its idea and expression has been passed down through music and culture as forms of counter-culture like beatnik, the flower movement, rock, or punk. In time it became recognized and integrated into art and society to become a part of modern culture.
Now, in the early 21st century, my home country of Japan is advocating policies that make it appear as if the country is going back to the pre-WWII era. Once again, I see that international society and human consciousness have made no major progress in the last century. It is marching once again to war. Men and war. We must look straight at it and keep thinking about this relationship that compels us to question the root of our own existence. We must do so, just as we must face the agony of death, even if we dearly wish not to.
And now there is another massive divergence that was not apparent a hundred years ago. This insanity called environmental destruction, which is caused by anthropocentrism has already brought about an irreversible catastrophe.
It’s centered around the small, yet massive gap between Earth’s natural laws and us, mankind, who are just one of the species living in this environment on this planet. Yet we overestimate ourselves to be the most advanced entity, while devastating, trampling on and exploiting the Earth’s ecosystem under the decree of ‘economics-first’, as we continually force other species to extinctions, disperse poisons, and even threatening our own survival by this destruction.
Every single day, we humans relentlessly pollute our Mother Earth, who is nurturing us, even at this very moment.
Insanity generated by our normal everyday life generates further insanity.
Nevertheless, we humans, the cause of all this, are showing practically no sign of remorse, and coexistence with other lives seems to be inconceivable to the majority of us. Even though there is a faint light of contrition, the gap is too deep and the fault is too great. There is no fundamental solution yet. Devastation and pollution are going on at the same rate as that of the population explosion.
This is the time we were born in. This is the time we live in. Yes, this is the today’s world.
I am telling this to my fellow Japanese citizens today, who are given false human rights and fake freedom, corrupt and indulging in lavishness. Those who do not rage or even cannot rage, who do not protest or even cannot protest, or even cannot raise their voice, who are domesticated like dumb animals, exploited to the core and willingly held in bondage by the ‘air’ of the society. They sit in silence when their own country is wasting tax money on despicable purposes, dispersing radiation, and is about to violate their basic human rights by the state secrets law and the anti-conspiracy law, and even when the government, through the national security law, could send off citizens of Japan to the battlefield to kill people, or to be killed, in other countries. I say fight for your dignity and rights.
But I know it's like water off a duck's back.
Our everyday behavior, or incessant craving for comfort and convenience, is strangling us, both in body and spirit, and it has surfaced as mass environmental destruction and mass extinction over time.
I want to destroy and abandon everything and vanish from this planet right now.
Dada denied every single value and eventually expanded human consciousness and widened the horizons of art. It was integrated into history and came to be known worldwide as a form of movement.
Why? Because there is no end to artistic values.
Human consciousness, or spirituality, is infinite and eternal. Just like the big bang, the origin of the universe, it keeps expanding.
That is the wisdom given to us, humans.
This body is existent.
This body is non-existent.
This world is existent.
This world is non-existent.
The universe exists when it is perceived and does not exist when it is not perceived. Five senses perceive it exists, but five senses do not exist. Non-existence exists. Existence does not exist.
Today’s DADA denies neither intelligence nor art.
It's impossible to deny them.
Today’s DADA says yes to intelligence.
Today’s DADA says yes to art.
Today’s DADA integrates the darkness of human society and starts by affirming it. Today’s DADA says yes to the future.
Without doing so, it’s impossible to understand human beings,
or human existence that is ugly and yet beautiful.
Without doing so, it’s impossible to recognize life,
or the existence of life that is cruel and yet magnificent.
Today is also DADA.
It’s today’s DADA.
Today is DADADA.
Today is also DADA.
Today is DADADA.
The future is also DADADA.
The future is DADADA.
